The deadline for school districts to join New Jersey's application for $400 million in federal funding in the "Race to the Top" program is today, a report in the Press of Atlantic City said.

The state Department of Education is offering every participating district at least $100,000 in additional funds if the state wins the grant, an incentive to ease some officials worried how much they would get from the grant itself, according to the report. As of Monday afternoon, 171 districts had signed up to participate in this second round, the report said. The state Legislature said last week it supported the application, but without endorsing the plan’s most controversial elements, including a plan to base teacher pay on student achievement.
