TRENTON — The state Senate and Assembly budget committees will each meet five times over the next two weeks for hearings on a package of bills meant to spur job creation.

The first meeting will take place on Dec. 8. They will meet again for three consecutive days from Dec. 14 to Dec. 16, and again on Dec. 22.

Senate President Stephen Sweeney (D-Gloucester) and Assembly Speaker Sheila Oliver (D-Essex) introduced the package last week, one day after Gov. Chris Christie rejected a compromise they proposed on arbitration reform — a key part of his package of “tool kit” bills to help towns curtail property taxes.

Republicans in the Legislature have called the package a diversion from tackling property tax reform.

The jobs package, expected to be made up of about 30 bills, includes proposals to overhaul the state’s corporate tax structure and create a job training program similar to an initiative in Georgia where people on the unemployment rolls get on-the-job training from potential employers.

“We promised swift action to bring jobs and businesses back to New Jersey, and this timetable will prove to residents and the business community that we are serious about getting the job done,” said Sweeney.
