TRENTON — Drivers would face lower fines if they forget their license, registration or insurance identification cards under a bill that advanced in the state Senate today.
The bill's sponsor, state Sen. Christopher “Kip” Bateman (R-Somerset) said the current fine of $150, plus $23 in court fees, is too high. The bill would allow a judge to decide what the fine would be, and would not allow him to make it over $100.
“If you’re a soccer mom and you’re running to your kid’s game and you forgot your license, it shouldn’t cost you $180,” said Bateman, who noted someone missing all three would have to pay almost $500.
The bill passed the Senate Transportation Committee unanimously this morning.
“This legislation makes the fine more reasonable and still gives a judge the flexibility to dismiss the charge completely if the missing documents can be produced,” he said.
