HOPATCONG — Gov. Chris Christie took his message of fiscal discipline to a town hall meeting in Hopatcong this morning.

It was the first time Christie took the roving town hall to Sussex County, where he won election in 2009 by a sizable margin over Democrat Jon Corzine.

The crowd, which clapped a little longer and laughed a little louder at his jokes, proved to be a welcoming crowd for his message.

"I think having a governor, who is smart and has perseverance to do what is right, is hot and sexy," one woman began her question.

Christie responded that he wanted the woman to write a note to his wife Mary Pat Christie, since the two had celebrated their 25-year wedding anniversary on Tuesday, "to keep her on her toes."

The most combative question came from a man who suggested Christie had not been conservative enough in making cuts to school aid last year.

Christie agreed with the premise, that suburban schools were getting shorted and too much money was going to urban schools, but countered there was nothing he could do until a change is made to the state Supreme Court.

"I do not like the funding formula," Christie said. "I think it has been unfair to suburbs, and I think it has been ineffective for cities."
