PHILLIPSBURG — An unregistered charity that collected money to rescue horses but misused some of the funds will cease operation under an agreement with New Jersey regulators.
The state Division of Consumer Affairs said today that NJ Horse Angels and its two trustees will repay more than $57,000 in misused donations to the division. It will donate the funds to other horse rescue groups.
Horse Angels trustees Sharon Catalano-Crumb and Frank Wikoff, both of Phillipsburg, also will be permanently barred from soliciting charitable donations.
The pair used websites and social networking sites to solicit donations.
The money was intended to save horses from being sold to pet food processors.
Some of the money was used for rescues. But investigators say Catalano-Crumb diverted funds for casino trips, meals and personal shopping.
