Chris Christie’s campaign to carve out Republican majorities in the Legislature just got a helping hand from Mitt Romney, who pitched in with a $25,000 donation to the state Republican Party.
Romney, the former Massachusetts governor and likely presidential contender in the 2012 race, announced today that his political-action committee gave the maximum donation to New Jersey Republicans gearing up for the fall races.
"It is important to help candidates who are fighting for conservative principles whether in Washington or in the states," Romney said in a statement. "I am happy to support the New Jersey GOP as its leaders fight to cut spending and stand up for the taxpayer."
The cash infusion comes after Christie hosted Romney for dinner at the governor’s mansion in January. Other Republicans generating presidential buzz have also sought out Christie recently: Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour was another dinner guest, and former Minnesota governor Tim Pawlenty plans to visit.
"Governor Chrtistie’s profile helps raise money for the state party to support the reform-minded candidates running this year," said Rick Gorka, spokesman for the New Jersey Republican Party. "The governor and the Republican Party enjoy a good base of support here in New Jersey, and folks around the country support the fight here."
New Jersey is one of four states with legislative elections this year. Christie has called repeatedly for a Republican majority, saying he won’t be able to change the state with Democrats blocking his efforts.
Christie spokesman Michael Drewniak declined to comment.
