TRENTON — State Sen. John Girgenti, who is expected to be moved out of his current legislative district to one where he would have an uphill fight to win reelection, said Saturday he is considering moving.
A spokesman for Girgenti (D-Passaic) said Saturday night that the senator, who began his legislative career in the Assembly in 1978, is considering moving from Hawthorne to Paterson, allowing him to run for reelection in a district similar to his current one.
Under the Democratic state legislative redistricting plan that prevailed yesterday, Girgenti would be pitted against state Sen. Robert Gordon (D-Bergen) in a mostly Bergen County district.
"People support John Girgenti because he’s a capable, effective and experienced senator, not because he lives in a particular town. Senator Girgenti is actively considering moving back to Paterson, the great city where he was born and has many friends, family and supporters,” said Girgenti spokesman Phil Swibinski. “John and his wife Rose will be reviewing all of their options over the next several days and will announce a decision at the appropriate time."
Girgenti was cut out of the district so that Nellie Pou (D-Passaic), who is Hispanic, would have a clear shot at an open state Senate seat.
Assemblyman Reed Gusciora (D-Mercer), whose hometown of Princeton will be put into a Republican-dominated district, is also considering moving into the district that more closely resembles what he currently represents.
“I plan on being a candidate in the 15th District,” he said.
