PENNSAUKEN — New Jersey Assemblyman Jack Conners has announced his retirement.

It's the first of a handful that may be coming because of a new legislative district map that was approved Sunday.

The Democrat's hometown of Pennsauken was moved into southern New Jersey's 6th district. Two Democratic incumbents already serve there.

Conners told The Burlington County Times it wouldn't be right for him to challenge lawmakers whom he believes are already doing a good job.

Conners was first elected in 1997 and became known as the voice of veterans in Trenton.

The 67-year-old Army National Guard veteran became chairman of the Military and Veterans' Affairs Committee.

Some veterans groups protested a redistricting plan that could have ended Conners' legislative career.
