TRENTON — A helpline set up to assist New Jersey residents with tax questions has been less than helpful in recent days, telling many callers that it's too busy to take their question.
The state Taxation Division's hotline number, (609) 292-6400, is listed on tax booklets.
And for several days this week, an automated voice has told callers that due to an extremely high call volume, the call center has been unable to take calls.
Treasury spokesman Andrew Pratt says that as the April 18 filing deadline gets closer and the volume of callers surges, people will have greater difficulty getting through to representatives.
Pratt says the hotline hours will be extended on the deadline day, when it will operate from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
