TRENTON — Lawmakers are a step closer to moving New Jersey's presidential primary to June, with other primary and municipal elections, after the Senate Budget Committee cleared the bill (S2883) this morning.
Sen. Paul Sarlo (D-Bergen), chairman of the committee, said the move will save the state $12 million.
Both Democrats and Republicans support the measure, saying it would save the state on election costs. The primary was moved to February in 2005 to give New Jersey more influence over the results, but the strategy backfired when several other states moved their primaries to the same day.
The Assembly passed the bill 76-0 on May 9.
