NEWARK — University Hospital — the focus of two studies about its future in New Jersey's medical school and health care market — is losing its president, a spokesman for the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey confirmed today.

Robin D. Wittenstein, has resigned to take a job as chief operating officer of the Penn State Hershey Health System, in Hershey, Pa, UMDNJ spokesman Jeffrey Tolvin said.

The news was first reported by NJBIZ this morning.

A Penn State graduate, Wittenstein will begin her new job on Aug. 15, Penn State system spokeswoman Megan Manlove said.

Tolvin said it was not immediately clear when she would step down from University.

Gov. Chris Christie appointed a task force earlier this year that is studying whether UMDNJ should be dismantled, and the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and the School of Public Health be turned over to Rutgers University. The Governor's Task Force on Higher Education has recommended dismantling the medical school — an idea opposed by UMDNJ President William F. Owen, Jr.

Saint Barnabas Health Care System also announced earlier this year it is studying whether to acquire University Hospital. Saint Barnabas operates six hospitals, including Newark Beth Israel Medical Center.
