The state is a step closer to moving its presidential primary from February to June.TRENTON — The state Senate has voted unanimously to move New Jersey's presidential primary election to June next year.
The Assembly previously approved the measure. It now goes to Gov. Chris Christie to be signed into law.
The primary was moved to February six years ago in an attempt to raise the state's influence in presidential politics.
But in 2012, Republicans and Democrats plan to penalize states that vote before March 1.
The chairman of the state Democratic Party estimates that holding the presidential primary on the same day as the regular primary for state offices will save $8 million to $12 million.
