TRENTON — An e-mail purporting to include a speeding ticket from the New Jersey State Police is fake and contains a damaging computer virus, according to a State Police news release.
Troopers received a report today that a resident's computer hard drive was erased after he downloaded an attachment he believed to be a photographic radar speeding ticket, Sgt. Stephen Jones said.
The e-mail had a subject line reading "Camera Violation" and an attachment called "Speeding Over 55 Zone," Jones said. When the victim opened the file, the virus wiped his hard drive.
The State Police do not use photographic radar to catch speeders, Jones said, and do not e-mail tickets to the public. He said residents should be careful before opening attachments to unusual e-mails or e-mails from unknown senders.
