TRENTON — The state netted taxpayers more than $116 million in improper Medicaid payments during the past fiscal year, about one-third more than the previous year.

The Office of the State Comptroller attributed the increase in recovered cash to the creation of new audit teams and an enhanced ability to use data to target fraud.

The money has been returned to both state and federal coffers, the office said in a news release. In addition, the office's proactive antifraud unit prevented another $210 million in Medicaid costs, the release said.

"These recoveries include funds that had gone to individuals who sought to manipulate a program that provides health care for some of the most vulnerable New Jersey residents," Comptroller Matthew Boxer said in the release.
