ELIZABETH — The Union County freeholder board plans to appoint parks director Alfred Faella tonight to the position of county manager.

A resolution promoting Faella to the county’s top job, which will be vacated on Aug. 1 with the retirement of George Devanney, appears on the board’s tentative agenda for tonight. The 56-year-old Mountainside resident would earn $155,000 annual salary, a bump of about $35,000 from his current position.

The county announced Devanney’s retirement plans last week. The powerful and politically connected manager — the nephew of state Sen. Raymond Lesniak, a Democratic powerbroker — has been doing the job for 9 years. He earns an annual salary of $168,336.

The 49-year-old’s departure comes three months after the retirement of Lawrence Caroselli, until then the county’s director of finance. It will be followed by the departure of deputy manager M. Elizabeth Genievich, who the county said will retire on Feb. 2.
