HASBROUCK HEIGHTS — Gov. Chris Christie said he was "relieved" that leaders in Washington, D.C., have reached a deal on raising the government's debt ceiling.

He also reiterated his criticisms of politics in the nation's capital, saying Republicans and Democrats were more interested in posturing for cable television than fixing the problem.

Like many Americans, Christie said, he was thinking, "What the hell are they doing down there?"

"They don't talk to each other, they talk at each other," he said, adding, "If we ever did that in New Jersey we'd be run out of town on a rail."

Christie said the creation of a new commission to determine more spending cuts in the future was not the best plan, but he's pleased a deal was reached. He said he wasn't sure how the cuts in federal spending already agreed upon will affect New Jersey, saying he still has to review the plan.

He also criticized Obama as disengaged from the negotiating process, and said some Republicans should have been more willing to compromise.

Although he did not single out any particular Republican or faction, he said, "There were a lot of Republicans in Congress who did not know when to declare victory."
