The New Jersey Education Association endorsed 66 Democrats and 2 Republicans this weekend
TRENTON — New Jersey's two most powerful Democratic lawmakers have been denied endorsements by the state's largest teachers union.
The New Jersey Education Association left state Senate President Stephen Sweeney and Assembly Speaker Sheila Oliver off its slate of endorsed candidates for the November election.
In June, Sweeney and Oliver supported an overhaul of the state's pension and health benefits for public workers, over the vocal objection of teachers and unions.
NJEA President Barbara Keshishian says the union's members refuse to give political resources to lawmakers who hurt teachers and their families.
The teachers union endorsed 66 Democrats and two Republicans on Saturday.
Last week, the AFL-CIO in its endorsements also snubbed Sweeney and other lawmakers who supported the overhaul.
