TRENTON — Republicans last night chose Gerry Nardello, a former mayor of Mount Laurel, to finish out the term of Assemblyman Patrick Delany after he abruptly announced his resignation last month.
But Nardello, who is retired, will only hold the seat until January.
At the same meeting, Republicans chose Burlington County Freeholder Chris Brown to be their candidate seeking a full-term for the seat, in the Republican-leaning 8th Legislative District.
“Chris is an entrepreneur. He’s created jobs as a businessman,” said Burlington County GOP Chairman Bill Layton, who said Brown owns 11 RE/MAX offices in New Jersey.
Nardello and Brown were selected by 8th District members of Republican committees from Burlington, Camden and Atlantic Counties. She will serve until January, until the winner of the November election will take over.
Delany, who served less than a year in the Assembly, announced his resignation last month, citing family issues. It is effective today.
Brown will join a ticket with state Sen. Dawn Marie Addiego (R-Burlington) and Scott Rudder (R-Burlington). Democrats are challenging them with Olympic track and field star Carl Lewis for state Senate, and Assembly candidates Sharyn Pertnoy-Schmidt and Raymond Storck.
