ATLANTIC CITY — Gov. Chris Christie has tapped Boston’s former economic development guru as the new executive director for the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority, according to two sources with knowledge of the decision.
The hiring of John Palmieri, scheduled to be announced Wednesday morning, is a critical step in the governor’s effort to rejuvenate Atlantic City. The Casino Reinvestment Development Authority, known as the CRDA, uses a slice of casino revenues to invest in economic and community projects in the troubled city.
The sources were granted anonymity to discuss the governor's decision before the official announcement.
Palmieri directed the Boston Redevelopment Authority from 2007 through this spring. Before that he worked in Providence, R.I., Charlotte, N.C., and Hartford, Conn.
More than one year ago Christie announced his plan to transform Atlantic City into a family-friendly resort that would also be a magnet for the convention business. To accomplish this, he is greatly expanding the state’s authority in the city.
