TRENTON — The state Attorney General's Office marked the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks this morning, with dignitaries remembering how its employees — from office workers to lawyers to state troopers -— jumped into action.

"We were basically improvising on all fronts," former Attorney General John Farmer Jr. told employees at the R.J. Hughes Justice Complex. "We were looking at potentially tens of thousands of people dead."

Farmer recalled the unknown following the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001: How many people died? What kind of help would people need? And would the attacks continue in the days to come?

"It can seem overwhelming to revisit this event time and time again," Farmer said. "But it’s important we do, because we’re saying every one of those lives mattered."

Farmer was joined by current Attorney General Paula Dow, as well as past attorneys general Peter Harvey, Zulima Farber and Stuart Rabner, the chief justice of the state Supreme Court. Public Defender Joseph Krakora also spoke at the event.
