TRENTON — Flooding that briefly shut down the parking garage adjacent to the New Jersey Statehouse in recent weeks will cost more than $420,000 to clean up.

The underground garage is used by state government employees who work in the Statehouse complex. It's located less than 200 yards from the banks of the Delaware River and is prone to flooding when the river rises.

Officials say the garage has endured 12 floods since 2004, five in the last two years, costing more than $3 million for environmental cleanups and repairs. The most recent floods were spurred late last month by Hurricane Irene and earlier this month by the remnants of Tropical Storm Lee.

The state hopes to receive federal disaster aid to help cover some of the cleanup costs.
