N.J. Attorney General Paula Dow, shown in this file photo, announced today the arrest of a former analyst for the state Department of Labor and Workforce Development who allegedly stole thousands to pay for her rent.

TRENTON — A former analyst for the state Department of Labor and Workforce Development was charged today with stealing $18,525 in public money to pay her landlord, the state Attorney General's Office said.

Sharon Caldwell, 57, of Trenton, allegedly used three government checks to pay rent for her apartment on West State Street in Trenton: One for $8,000 dated Jan. 28, 2009, one for $3,525.85 dated Aug. 15, 2009, and one for $7,000 dated July 23, 2010., the office said.

The unauthorized checks were discovered last year by the department's internal auditors, the office said in a news release.

“This defendant was entrusted with access to a state checking account, but we allege that she flagrantly breached that trust by stealing from the account,” Stephen Taylor, director of the division of criminal justice, said in the release.

Caldwell was indicted by a state grand jury in Mercer County on charges of official misconduct and theft by deception.
