TRENTON — Environmental activists will urge Gov. Chris Christie to reconsider his decision to remove New Jersey from a multistate initiative to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Environment New Jersey will stage rallies in Princeton, Asbury Park and Rutherford today.

Executive director Dena Mottola says the group also will call on lawmakers who sided with the governor to oppose the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative to reconsider.

Mottola says the program is "crucial."

Christie appeased conservatives but disappointed environmentalists when he announced in May that New Jersey would leave the 10-state pact at the end of the year. The governor said the program was ineffective at stemming carbon dioxide pollution.

Democrats failed to override Christie's veto of legislation keeping New Jersey in the pact.
