Jack Ciattarelli's resignation is effective immediately and was spurred by the death of running mate Assemblyman Peter Biondi
SOMERVILLE — Somerset County Freeholder Jack Ciattarelli has resigned from the position to focus on his new seat in the state Assembly.
Ciattarelli, a Republican who was elected to the 16th District office earlier this month, said the sudden resignation was forced by the death of Assemblyman Peter Biondi, who died from cancer days after his re-election. Ciattarelli said Biondi’s death presented "extremely urgent" challenges, and he now needs to find a new legislative office and staff.
Ciattarelli, 49, has been a freeholder since 2007 and was named the freeholder director last year. He was a Raritan borough councilman from 1990 to 1995.
"We wish Jack all the best in his new role in the state Assembly, and thank him for his five years of dedicated service to the citizens of Somerset County," Somerset County Freeholder Director Robert Zaborowski said.
Ciattarelli’s resignation takes effect immediately, and the freeholders are expected to swear in a replacement on Dec. 13. Ciattareli had one year remaining on his second term.
