TRENTON — An environmental group says state government is failing to adequately protect the picturesque Highlands Region of northwest New Jersey that is the source of drinking water for 5 million residents.

The Sierra Club gives a grade of "F'' to the administration of Gov. Chris Christie for its policies affecting the Highlands six years after the Legislature approved a growth-management plan for the region.

Sierra Club Director Jeff Tittel said today that Christie has cut the budget for key components of the Highlands Act and is nibbling away at environmental safeguards.

Christie spokesman Michael Drewniak did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment.

The Highlands region includes nearly 900,000 acres in seven New Jersey counties.
