New Jersey's unemployment rate remained at 9.8 percent in April while the public and private sectors added 10,500 jobs, the state labor department said today.

The state's rate, which usually hugs the U.S. number, was for the first time since November slightly below the national rate of 9.9 percent.

Numbers from a separate survey showed the private sector added 8,100 jobs while the public sector added 2,400 jobs.

The monthly jobs figures, however, are hardly an exact tally and often shift from month to month as more data is added. The labor department today said job losses in March were deeper than originally reported by 1,800, with 4,900 jobs lost from February to March.

Census hiring drove public sector growth, with 2,100 temporary workers hired by the federal government.
