TRENTON — New Jersey Senate Democrats have received a federal subpoena asking for documents on the stalled Xanadu retail and entertainment complex in the Meadowlands and its original developer, Maryland-based Mills Corp.
Senate Democratic spokesman Derek Roseman confirmed Friday that the subpoena was received Wednesday and said the legislators will comply with it. He declined to comment further.
Others who have read the subpoena said it asks for documents from 2002 and 2003 pertaining to any records or proposed legislation, with a primary focus on endorsements for the project. The people who saw the subpoena spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss its contents on the record.
Rebekah Carmichael, spokeswoman for U.S. Attorney Paul Fishman, said she couldn't confirm or deny whether Xanadu was being investigated.
Xanadu sits next to the Izod Center in the sports complex just outside New York City. It's a sprawling $2 billion complex that's to feature shops, an indoor snow dome, a movie complex, bowling alley, restaurants and an upscale martini bar.
It was originally slated to open in late 2007.
Mills Corp. first proposed the 2 million-square-foot retail and entertainment project in mid-2002. It was replaced as general managing partner of the project in 2007 by Los Angeles-based Colony Capital Acquisitions, which turned over the $2 billion project to its lenders last month.
The Securities and Exchange Commission investigated Mills for its financial problems at the time it was purchased by Simon Property Group.
A new opening date has not been specified.
