TRENTON — U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez announced legislation today intended to help financial markets, government agencies and other key industries prevent cyber attacks.
The legislation was prompted by news that computers at NASDAQ had been hacked multiple times, Menendez said in a conference call to unveil the Cybersecurity Enhancement Act.
The legislation will allow the National Science Foundation, the Department of Defense and Department of Homeland Security to develop cyber attack prevention plans, Menendez said. Those agencies would share their research with groups like NASDAQ, the New York Stock Exchange, power companies and oil refineries, he said.
"We believe that these multi-pronged efforts are exactly what we need to take in order to ensure that we do not have the type of breaches, whether in our trading platforms, but also in other major significant infrastructure in our country," Menendez said.
