TRENTON — All New Jersey school districts would receive a 1 percent increase in state aid under the governor's budget, which will be released later today, according to two sources briefed on the plan.

Christie today will announce he will beef up state aid for schools by $250 million, according to Democratic Chairman John Wisniewski. In the spending plan that passed last year, Christie sliced funding by $820 million, and schools lost up to five percent of their total budget.

Christie has promised to revamp how New Jersey funds its public schools. In the past several years, the state has spent about $10 billion annually on education.

Those cuts in the budget that passed last year prompted a court challenge now being examined by a special master appointed by the state Supreme Court.

Senate Republicans are pushing Christie to send more money to suburban districts, and cut pre-school programs in the state’s poorest districts from full-day to half-day.
