New Jersey voters go to the polls today for congressional primary elections, where 47 candidates are competing for their parties’ nominations in the state’s 13 congressional districts.
There are 29 Republicans running — many of whom are inspired or backed by the tea party movement — and 18 Democrats.
Every Republican incumbent congressman from New Jersey faces at least one primary challenger except U.S. Rep. Scott Garrett (R-5th Dist.), who is widely considered the state’s most conservative representative. But only a few districts are expected to have competitive races.
In District 3, a seat held by freshman U.S. Rep. John Adler (D-3rd Dist.), two Republicans are vying to take him on: former Philadelphia Eagles tackle Jon Runyan and former Tabernacle Committeeman Justin Murphy, who has secured the support of most tea party groups.
In District 6, millionaire newspaper publisher Diane Gooch faces Highlands Mayor Anne Little, a tea party favorite, to win the chance to take on 22-year incumbent U.S. Rep. Frank Pallone (D-6th Dist.).
In District 7, freshman U.S. Rep. Leonard Lance (R-7th Dist.) faces three challengers: businessman David Larsen and tea party activists Alonzo “Lon” Hosford and Bruce Baker.
