TRENTON — The New Jersey Department of Education received 58 applications for charter schools and will release a full list of the applicants later today.

The state will notify applicants of their approval or disapproval by Sept. 30, said Alan Guenther, a Department of Education spokesman.

In January, the state received 50 charter school applications and accepted 23 of them, the largest approved in a single year and increasing the state's total by about one third.

The new charter schools approved during the last cycle are scattered around the state in large and small municipalities, including Jersey City, Atlantic City, East Orange, Linden, Egg Harbor City, Willingboro and Gloucester Township.
