TRENTON — The New Jersey Assembly is scheduled to vote today on a measure to push back the state's presidential primary to June from February.

The move is supported by both parties.

Holding the presidential primary the same day as the regular primary for state office would save taxpayers the cost of holding two elections.

National Republicans and Democrats hoping to extend the nominating process also plan to penalize states that vote before March 1.

Gov. Chris Christie says the move could give Republican voters more influence in deciding their party's nominee.

In 2008, New Jersey and 24 other states held presidential primaries in February.

An Assembly panel unanimously approved the measure last week.

The state Senate has yet to take it up.
