TRENTON — New Jersey may lift an ignored rule that bans using large farm equipment on Sundays and holidays.

The rule is more than 40 years old and has its roots in the days when working on Sundays was frowned upon and people worried that farm vehicles could pull down power lines when utility crews were not working.

Motor Vehicle Commission spokeswoman Elyse Coffey told The Home News Tribune of East Brunswick the agricultural community says Sunday mornings are the best time to actually operate the machinery because there's less traffic.

Many farmers are unaware of the rule.

Kurt Alstede of Chester Township told the newspaper the rule sounds like a law that everyone forgot and no one enforces.
