BARNEGAT — Gov. Chris Christie has cleared the way for $650 million in low-cost and no-cost loans to flow into water quality and protection projects throughout New Jersey.
The bipartisan legislation Christie signed today will make $400 million available for projects that clean up water used for fishing and swimming. Another $250 million will be available for drinking water projects.
The money comes from New Jersey's Environmental Infrastructure Trust program. The state and federal governments will share the cost.
Cities, counties and utilities already have submitted more than 170 applications.
Christie signed the bills overlooking the Barnegat Bay, which is plagued by heavy pollution and overdevelopment.
Christie says New Jersey can be a future model for other states by carefully balancing ecological protection with economic development.
