NEWARK — A 63-year-old woman who once fled New Jersey rather than answer allegations she was defrauding her own day care center was sentenced to four years in state prison today, the Attorney General’s Office said.
Muslimah Suluki, the former director of New Africa Day Care in Newark, admitted in June that she and her ex-husband diverted $234,644 in public money intended for their day care center to their own bank accounts.
As part of her sentence, Suluki must repay the money to the state Department of Education, the office said in a news release.
Suluki and her ex-husband, Mahdi, allegedly spent the money on personal purchases between 2001 and 2004, authorities said. The funds were from the Education Department and were meant for the couple's non-profit business.
Suluki and her ex-husband fled the state in 2008, shortly after Mahdi Suluki pleaded guilty to theft charges. They were captured in North Carolina in January 2010. Mahdi Suluki was sentenced to four years in prison earlier this year.
