N.J. Gov. Chris Christie spoke to seniors about rolling back cuts in health care in Linden.TRENTON — The state has extended deadline to apply for the “Senior Freeze” property tax rebate program meant to protect senior citizens and the disabled from rising property taxes.
Residents now have until Nov. 1 to submit their paperwork. The original deadline was Aug. 2.
In previous years, the program refunded seniors and the disabled for the amount their property taxes went up. This year, it will only refund the same amount it did last year, even if property tax bills have risen further.
Those eligible must be 65 or older or receive social security benefits; have lived in New Jersey continuously for the last 10 years; owned and lived in their homes for at least three years; paid the full amount of property taxes; and must make under $70,000 a year.
Those who just became eligible for the program this year will not receive checks, but are encouraged to enroll so their property tax bills will be frozen if the state fully funds the program next year.
